THE HERD INDEX · WEEK 43

Ten creators, one portfolio, one rule.

scores to Fri 23 Oct 2026 · updated after each Friday's close

Creators are the YouTube channels we track. The Herd is the ten with the best Herd Score this month. Speakers are the people in the videos. Held means in their follow portfolio: what following their mentions would hold, not their own account.

The One Rule

Every mention goes into the creator's follow portfolio, measured against the S&P 500.
The ten best Herd Scores make The Herd every month.
The herd line is the Herd's own return: beat it to climb.

Pick an index (Top 5 · Top 10 (The Herd) · Top 20 · All creators) and a period. Each period starts the lines at 100 on its first Friday; the numbers under the curve are for that period, with the other period's in small print. Shaded weeks: The Herd was chosen for them after the fact, with the same rule. Hover or tap for the week's numbers.

How it works

  1. STEP 1
    TRACK

Every time a creator we follow says in one of their own videos that a listed stock is a buy or a sell, it counts as a mention: who said it, which stock, long or short, and the quote.

  2. STEP 2
    FOLLOW

Each creator gets a follow portfolio: every long mention is bought at the stock's next close and held until 90 days after the creator last mentioned it, every stock weighing the same. A short mention sells it.

  3. STEP 3
    SCORE

The follow portfolio's return against the S&P 500, its alpha, how often it beat the S&P 500 over three months and its hit rate make the Herd Score from 1 to 10.

  4. STEP 4
    COMPOSE

On the first Friday of each month the 10 best Herd Scores become The Herd. The Herd Index is their follow portfolios held together, every creator weighing the same, day by day against the S&P 500.

Holdings are distinct stocks held by the index this week. Since joined is each member's result after selection: following them from the freeze that put them in The Herd, minus the S&P 500. Weights per stock are not published: the index is non-investable.

Most held by The Herd

The stocks the follow portfolios of The Herd hold on 2026-10-23, by how many of its 10 creators hold each. Each creator's portfolio weighs every stock the same; the index's weights per stock are not published.

The stocks The Herd holds per sector (GICS, from Yahoo), each stock counted once; Unclassified when a stock has none.

Methodology

What counts as a mention

A mention is one creator saying, in one of their own videos, that a listed stock is a buy or a sell. Mentions are attributed to the channel they were made on: what a creator says as a guest on someone else's show is not counted for them.

The follow portfolio

A long mention is bought at the stock's first close after the video, if that comes within 30 days. Another long mention of the same stock keeps it longer instead of buying it twice. It is sold at the first close 90 days after the latest mention, or at the next close after a short mention. Every stock held weighs the same, every day; a day with nothing to hold earns the S&P 500.

Measured against the S&P 500

Every return is set against the S&P 500 total return (^SP500TR) over the same days, both with dividends reinvested.

The Herd Score

A creator with 1 year of history, 10 finished bets and a mention in the last 182 days gets a Herd Score: return against the S&P 500 over up to three years, alpha over the last year, consistency and hit rate, each ranked among those creators, with a short record pulled toward the middle. The best tenth score 10.

The Herd

On the first Friday of each month the 10 creators with the best Herd Score become The Herd until the next month's first Friday. Weeks before the real monthly freezes use the same rule on that month's first Friday. "Since joined", under The Herd now, follows a member from the freeze that put them in The Herd, minus the S&P 500 over the same days: their result after selection, not the record that selected them.

Index constituents

Top 10 (The Herd) holds The Herd. Top 5 and Top 20 hold the first 5 and 20 by Herd Score on the same Friday; when fewer creators have a score, the list is shorter. All creators holds every creator we follow.

Index weights

Every constituent weighs the same. Inside a creator's share every stock they hold weighs the same, so a stock two creators both hold weighs twice as much. A constituent with nothing open earns the S&P 500 for their share.

Rebalancing

Daily: the index's return each day is the average of its constituents' follow portfolios. The constituents change on the first Friday of each month.

Benchmark and levels

The index and the S&P 500 both start at 100 on 2022-10-07; the curve shows each Friday's close. The benchmark is ^SP500TR, with SPY as fallback when it is unavailable. The curve also shows Nasdaq Composite TR (^XCMP) as a second line; every number on this page is measured against the S&P 500 only.

Missing prices

A stock without a close on a day keeps its last close, so it earns nothing that day. A stock whose price data turns negative is dropped from that day on.

Periods

The curve shows "Since 7 Oct 2022", the whole history, or "Since 4 Sep 2026", the weeks since the site began following The Herd. Each view starts the lines at 100 on its first Friday, and the numbers under the curve are for that view, with the other view's numbers in small print under them. Every week uses the same rules, and no day sees a mention dated after it. The weeks before 4 Sep 2026 are shaded on the curve: The Herd was chosen for them after the fact, with the same rule.

What is excluded

Short mentions are not held: they sell a long the creator held. Mentions without a listed ticker, mentions made outside a creator's own channel, and stocks whose first close comes more than 30 days after the video are not counted.

Entertainment, not investment advice — the host is a sheep. The Herd Index is not an investable product. No per-stock weights are published, nothing can be bought or tracked, and nothing on this page is a recommendation to buy or sell any security.
